Stay

Perfromance for young audiences based on Lindsay´s Eager novel The hour of the bees.

Carolina comes to see her grandpa for the first time in a very special ocasion. They are going to move him out to sell his ranch in the middle of the desert, and send him to a sanatory for elderly people suffering dementia.

There´s a young couple deeply in love. Thanks to a tree which can heal every wound, they live a perfectly safe life in a mythical oasis. But she longs for more. She leaves. He stays. The oasis slowly starts to die.

Two paralel stories joined throught one magical place. Carolina is the one to reveal the trhuth about her grandfather and the story of his past. Story about the familiy, geeting old, forgetting. Memories vanish, forms distort and decompose. But them important is not to be forgotten.

In this performance my aim was to create two separate spaces for two different layers of the story. The small puppet stage for a puppet of Grandpa and Carolina which represented the present in a dessert. The other one was a space for thstory of the young couple living in the oasis - an open space framed by the white cricle. In the corner there is an object representing the magical tree - an installation composed from hanging  metalic and green elipses. As a part of choreography, actor pours special liquid to the metalic elpises, which transformes them into a rust. This way, young man reacts after each escape of his wife. Little by little, as the relationship is falling apart, the leaves of the tree are destructed by the rust. The puppet of the granpda its also covered with the rusty texture. During the show its revealed, that the mytical story is a story of Carolina´s grandparents and the dessert farm used to be the oasis in the past.

I was inspired by contrast between the  the strong, harmless and shiny metal, yet so untouched and cold. The weather and time worked for it, transformingt it into beautiful, diverse, colorful and vivid structure. Is it weakening and demaging or  gaining beauty and fragility. Through this material transformation, I tried to show out the changes of our bodies and souls in the process od eldering as beautiful and valuable.
